What changes this season

What changes

Until now, AfricaTech followed the news. One topic, one week, and the next started from scratch. From September, the news becomes the doorway into a country, not the subject of the episode. Each week, the same exercise on a different country, with the same format, from the first to the last episode of the season.

What an episode looks like

Twenty-eight minutes, six moments

The five things we watch

Five axes, five views

  1. 1The foundationCables and landings, exchange points, data centres, the energy feeding them, network coverage.
  2. 2The ruleData law, regulatory authority, national strategy, decisions actually published.
  3. 3The peopleEngineers trained locally, training pipelines, research, departures and returns.
  4. 4The moneyLocal funding, payments, digital taxation, value that stays in the country.
  5. 5The useReal uses, languages of access to services, gap between the capital and the rest of the country.

Four words, and no others

The states

We do not give a mark. No country receives a figure, a total, an average or a rank. Each axis receives a state, at a date, and nothing more.

Absent
Nothing documented, or a text exists but no application is observed.
Announced
Decided, funded or inaugurated, but nothing is in service at the date of broadcast.
In service
It works, and control lies elsewhere: operations, funding, expertise or hosting outside the country.
Held locally
It works, and control is in the country.

When other countries come to connect to what a country has built, we say so. This is not a fifth state, and it adds to nothing.

What we do not do

Six commitments

  1. 01No figure attached to a country: no mark, no total, no average, no ranking.
  2. 02Never the whole country. We say the rule is announced, never this country is average.
  3. 03No country-to-country comparison. We compare states, not countries.
  4. 04No map of the continent. Cards and a table, sorted by order of broadcast.
  5. 05An announcement is not an activation. We count what works.
  6. 06No payment, no quid pro quo, no communication to qualify an axis.

The programme

Four blocks, thirty-two countries

Each block groups eight countries that share a common situation. The ninth episode of each block is a synthesis review. Thirty-six episodes in total.

After each broadcast, the country card is placed here: five axes, five states, five dated sources. The table is sorted by order of broadcast. It is never sorted by state.

You can take part

Take part

  1. 01You are building in one of these countries, or you know the right person. Write to me — each episode's interview is prepared six weeks in advance.
  2. 02You think a state is wrong. Send the proof: a published decision, a report, a contract, a documented activation. If the proof warrants it, the state is revised, the correction is dated online and stated on air.
  3. 03You want the full methodology. It is published before the first episode, and it does not change during the season.
